What Is the Endocannabinoid System?
Every mammal has an endocannabinoid system or ECS. The ECS is a complex system of neurotransmitters and receptors found in almost every part of the body including the nervous and immune systems.
Our bodies naturally produce endocannabinoids- chemical compounds that carry signals on demand between neurotransmitters within our ECS. Based on the body’s feedback, these help regulate and create equilibrium when something is out of balance.
Another way to imagine how endocannabinoids function is to picture a vast information highway, with messages and signals traveling throughout the body. Endocannabinoids are like the traffic cops, slowing down some messages and letting others through, to control the flow of communication.
Our ECS influences a variety of bodily functions including neurotransmission, pain perception, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and liver function. The endocannabinoid system is complexly intertwined with our immune system, regulating the body’s response to disease and inflammation.
Since virtually all of the body’s internal communications are affected by the ECS, endocannabinoids form a literal bridge between body and mind.
A healthy ECS enables homeostasis by regulating & maintaining the balance of various physiological processes including movement, mood, memory, appetite & pain.
Deficiency in our ECS means we are not producing enough endocannabinoids to keep the system flourishing. This can occur due to physical and psychological impacts such as:
- Lifestyle Impact
- Prolonged Pharmaceutical use
- Drug addiction
When we have a deficiency in producing endocannabinoids we can influence and modulate the function of our ECS by using CBD, a phytocannabinoid, which works like a ‘key’ in our receptor ‘locks’ of our ECS enabling the flow of chemical signals throughout the body again.
In addition to getting your body back to full functionality, CBD packs potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. CBD has also been clinically proven to treat anxiety, movement disorders, and alleviate nerve pain.
